Hair Q&A Part 2

September 4 2015 | 15:06:28

Hello everyone!

I hope the last Q&A benefitted you. Here is part 2 of the Q&A and I am sure you will continue to learn more about hair care!

Are there are shampoos that are suitable to use with the tap water in Singapore?
Generally, the water in Singapore is good. However, it is more important for you to find a shampoo that is suitable for your hair type and scalp condition.

After visiting the hair salon, how do I keep my hair in the same tiptop condition?
It is best for you to check with your hair stylist, but I would recommend for you not to touch your hair as much as possible on that day.

Is there a way to make my hair grow much faster?
Unfortunately, there is no such method.

Having white/grey hair worries me. Is there a way to reduce grey hairs?
There is no way, unfortunately.

There are many different types of hair care products such as oil, emulsion, sprays etc. What are the differences between them?
Use oil-based products if you want to retain glossy hair. For emulsion, it can be different depending on the manufacturer. Those with a light texture helps keep your hair style in place for a longer time, but the heavier ones help to moisturise your hair (and it can do better than an oil-based product). Sprays are overall very light in texture.

How should I care for my hair if I am outdoors for a long time?
You should use UV protection care products if your hair is exposed to a lot of heat and sunlight.

Should I protect my hair from ultraviolet (UV) rays?
Yes, you should use UV protection care when you are outside.

How can I get glossy hair?
You need to have a balanced diet with lots of nutrition as part of your internal care. For external care, you should apply hair oil.

No matter how busy you are, remember to spend some time caring for your hair. It will go a long way in helping you achieve healthy, shiny and gorgeous hair!

Hair Care Q&A Part 1

August 18 2015 | 10:30:12

Your most burning questions about hair care answered!

Hello and greetings to you!

As a hair care professional, I often receive many questions from people about how to care for their hair. Here are my answers to some of the most frequently asked questions I’ve received, and I hope they will come in useful!

What is the cause of damaged hair?
Some of the common causes of damaged hair include friction, heat, cut, perming, colouring, sunlight, air pollution and diet etc.

Friction is the result of when you towel dry your hair and then brush it. You have to be gentle with your hair so you should dry it by gently tapping it with a towel and avoid rubbing your hair dry. After that, brush your hair gently with a hair brush containing animal hair such as wild boar.

Heat exposure is very harmful to hair. Heat from a hair dryer, straightening hair iron, as well as sunlight can affect your hair. It is okay to use a hair dryer if you use it infrequently, but you have to be especially careful if you use a hair iron. The reason is because the moisture in your hair can be lost if it is exposed to temperatures higher than 120 °C. Deformation of your hair occurs at 150 °C and above, and it can even melt if exposed to 250 °C or more! Sunlight can affect the ultraviolet (UV) radiation and infrared radiation within your hair structure.

The perming and colouring processes include the use of alkaline that damages your hair, but you can minimise the damage if you let someone with professional knowledge work on your hair.

Other things like haircut, air pollution (affects the cuticle) and excessive dieting (due to the lack of nutrients to the hair) can also contribute to damaged hair.

Non-silicon shampoos have been getting very popular. Does this mean that non-silicon shampoos are better than those with silicon?
Silicon shampoos was originally used to create a protective layer of film on the surface of your hair. It is good for your hair, but not really for your scalp.

I always go to bed without drying my hair. Does this damage my hair?
If you go to sleep with wet hair, the cuticles in your hair will stay open and will add more friction to your hair. The moisture in your hair will also leak easily, and this is not good for your scalp.

My hair feels coarse after I use my organic shampoo. Why?
Generally, your hair will tend to feel coarse after using a shampoo. The feeling of coarseness is amplified if you use an organic shampoo. However, there are some organic shampoos that CAN help your hair feel smoother.

Which type of hair treatment is better? The one that needs to be rinsed off or the one that does not?

The non-rinse off type is the kind you leave on your hair, and it has a higher capability of penetrating to the internal parts of your hair. On the other hand, the rinse off type has a stronger coating effect to protect your hair. My advice would be to use both types interchangeably.

What is the difference between a hair conditioner and a hair treatment?
A hair conditioner is used to condition the surface of your hair while a treatment works to repair your hair internally. A rinsing treatment is like a hair conditioner and is for preventing tangles.

Is it possible to minimise my split ends?
Depending on how you care for your hair, it is possible to prevent more split ends from occurring.
