Top 6 Skincare Mistakes That Are Destroying Your Skin

Most of us have a skincare routine which we practice regularly – for some of us, even religiously – but if you’re not seeing the results you want, could there be something you’ve missed out on? Or worse, been doing wrong the entire time? In this article, we share with you 6 common skincare mistakes you should be avoiding at all costs.

#1 - Wearing makeup to bed

After a night of hard partying, all you’d want to do is just crawl into bed right away, right? Well, it’s important that you at least try to wash off your makeup. Leaving makeup on can trap the dirt and oils in your pores overnight and clog them. Pores that are clogged appear larger and it is harder for them to shrink. Overtime, this may even lead to skin inflammation.

#2 – Over-exfoliating your skin

Regular exfoliation is advised by skin experts to rid your skin of dead skin cells, but doing so more than 2 to 3 times a week can be damaging to your skin. Aggressive exfoliation removes the protective layer of our skin, leaving it vulnerable to environmental stressors like dust and UV rays that speed up the signs of aging.

#3 - Piling on too much product

Every time you read a glowing review about a new skincare product, do you convince yourself that you need it? Before you know it, you’re spending so much money and time piling on product after product on your face. If you’re guilty of that, it’s time for you to stop. Experts recommend 3 to 4 products for your daily skincare routine at the most, so avoid overloading your face with unnecessary products. Instead of being effective, applying too many different products may actually backfire and cause more harm than good. Switching skincare products too often can also irritate your skin, so try to avoid that.

#4 – Going to bed late

A lot of you probably know that getting sufficient sleep is important to achieving good skin, but even if you go to bed very late at night (or in the wee hours of the morning) and sleep for 8 hours, it doesn’t guarantee quality rest. In fact, you might be missing out on your body’s natural process of cell regeneration and repair, and most especially the release of growth hormones at its peak (during the hours of 11pm and 2am) while you are in deep sleep. These growth hormones stimulate collagen formation that contributes to the appearance of youthfulness.

#5 – Forgetting to apply sunscreen

You may think it’s alright to forgo your sunscreen because the sun isn’t out, but don’t forget that ultraviolet (UV) rays can still penetrate the clouds. After some time, too much exposure to UV rays can damage your skin and cause premature skin aging - and in the worst case scenario, may even lead to skin cancer. These days, a lot of makeup incorporate UV protection so you can buy those instead. Remember to look out for UV protection that is about SPF 30.

#6 – Sleeping with your hair on your face

Those with longer fringes tend to suffer from this problem. If you haven’t washed your hair before going to bed, your hair will be full of oils. Going to bed with your hair touching your face will cause the dirt and oils from your hair to transfer to your face, clogging up your pores. It’s best that you pin back your hair so that it doesn’t fall on your face while you are sleeping.
