Quick-fix beauty solutions to look perfect once more in 10 minutes or less!

Beauty emergencies can occur to anyone at any time and any place… If you’re prepared to do a little improvisation, you’ll be able to turn yourself from looking like an ogre to looking like a goddess once more!

Arm yourself with the following tips we’ve put together for you and you’ll find them handy during times of unfortunate mishaps. Read on…

Hair Fixes

Oily or greasy hair
If you do not have dry shampoo on hand, try DIY dry shampoo alternatives to clean your roots and scalp. Rub baby powder directly into your roots; or mix a cup of ground oatmeal and baking powder, rub it into your roots and brush it out to remove oil and dirt.

You can also make do with wet wipes as the rubbing alcohol in them will help to rid your scalp of oil.

Take it a step further by making your hair smell nice - just add a few drops of your preferred essential oil into a spray bottle of water, then spritz it all over your head.

Frizzy hair
Detangle your hair with a large tooth comb, wet your hands with clean water and run them through your hair so that they become damp (not dripping wet).

Spray your hair with heat protector, blow dry it in a downwards-directions, and then apply serum containing argan or Moroccan oil to the ends of your hair; alternatively, use just a tiny bit of hand lotion to tame those flyaway strands.

If you have thin hair, remember not to apply too much serum/lotion/product as it will weigh your hair down.

Makeup Fixes

Suffering from patchy eyebrows? If you’ve got a little mascara leftover from doing your eyelashes, use your wand to brush up your eyebrows.

If you have thick and unruly brows, smooth them down with a little bit of lip balm. You can also keep them tame all day by spraying a little hairspray on a clean mascara wand and then smoothing your eyebrows into your desired shape.

Get an instant brow lift by drawing a line directly over the top line of your eyebrows with a highlighter pencil, and blend it in until it is almost invisible.

Brighten and open up your sleepy eyes by filling in the corners of your eyes with a nude/white-coloured eyeliner pencil or eyeshadow.

If your eyeliner pencil is too soft or crumbly, place it into the freezer for 10 minutes to harden it before you use it. Otherwise, simply use your mascara as an eyeliner.

If you've overdone your mascara so that your eyelashes have become clumpy, just use a toothpick to separate out the clumps!

When you’re done with your makeup, give yourself an extra dewy glow with face lotion – put a small dot of it on your fingertips and smear it onto your cheekbones in an upwards-direction.

Other than the old-fashioned method of pinching your cheeks, give your cheeks a blush by dabbing a little lipstick on the apples of your cheeks and blending it!

Create your own temporary self-tanner by mixing powdered bronzer with moisturiser.

Ran out of face moisturiser? Apply natural margarine (yes, we’re serious!) or shea butter to your face, but make sure you have cleansed your face thoroughly before doing so.

For dry skin, use Post-its or scotch tape to remove your dry flaky skin and apply lip balm onto your nose. If you have oily skin and need to blot the excess oil, use receipt papers, toilet seat covers or Post-its in place of oil-blotting sheets!

If a pimple has suddenly showed up on your face – do not fret. Simply dab a blob of Greek yoghurt, shaving cream or basic toothpaste (no whitening formula etc) onto the pimple, leave on for 10 minutes and then rinse off – this will help to reduce the redness.

Get rid of flaky and chapped lips through exfoliation – apply a bit of lip balm and then scrub your lips gently using a toothbrush.

If you have dry lips, apply some lip balm and blot the excess out before putting on your lipstick (choose a creamy formula over a matt finish). If you have run out of lip balm, use Vaseline in its place.

After applying your lipstick, prevent smudges and help it last longer by holding a tissue over your lips lightly and then dusting a bit of translucent powder over it.

Teeth/Breath Fixes

After brushing and flossing your teeth, peel a ripe banana and rub the inside of the peel on your teeth for two minutes. Let it sit for about 5 minutes then brush it with a dry toothbrush.

Another option is to combine two teaspoons of baking soda and lemon juice to form a smooth paste – apply this to your teeth with a toothbrush, leave on for a minute and rinse (lemon juice is acidic so use this once in a while only). You can also remove stains on your teeth with a coffee filter.

To avoid playing up your yellow teeth, choose lipsticks with a blue base like bright red or red; avoid those with orange, yellow or shade hues.

Bad breath
Freshen up your breath by chewing a fresh piece of mint, lemon wedge or apples. You can also rinse your mouth with a mouthwash or clean water and then drink water with lime or lemon juice.

Avoiding pungent foods, drinking water after your mug of coffee and staying hydrated all day will help to keep your breath fresh!

Nail Fixes

Chipped nail polish
The best way to fix it is to just remove the nail polish altogether. Otherwise, use a toothpick as your “brush”, dot on the nail polish to the inside of the chip and let it dry.

Another way is to pick out a glitter topcoat (choose the one with larger glitter flakes) and paint it over your chipped nail polish for an instant fix – it will fill in the cracks and distract from the imperfections.
