Move over, red lipsticks.
It’s time for orange to shine!
Tracy Chua unearths the Top 8
Orange Lippies perfect for Asian skin.

Before the Korean drama “My Love from the Star” became a regional hit, fashion capitals all over the world sent their models strutting down runways with orange lipsticks, predicting the surprising rise of this shade.

After “My Love from the Star” became a phenomenon in South Korea and other Asian countries, orange lipsticks start selling out in beauty counters worldwide. The sudden popularity of this difficult shade puzzles beauty brand owners not in the know. Why are Asians, usually known for our subtleness, buying out this bold shade?

Cheon Song Yi Laneige My Love from the Star

No single Asian actress, in recent years, has carried off this perplexing shade better than Jun Ji Hyun, who played the heroine, Cheon Song Yi, in the famous K-drama also named as “You Who Came from The Stars”. Many have since taken her cue and plunged into the mysterious attraction of this electrifying shade.

It’s a tricky color, no doubt. Here are some

1. Flawless Cover - Orange lipsticks tend to accentuate skin redness and blemishes. Use a medium coverage foundation and dab on concealer if your skin still appears patchy.

2. Keep It Simple - Orange clashes easily with other colors, so keep the rest of your makeup simple. Your best bet is to use black - black eyeliner, highlighter on your brow bone, kohl pencil and coats of black mascara should do the trick. And yes, you can still do your cat’s eyes, but stay off the smoky eye look. If you must, a light dust of gold, copper or brown eyeshadow shades on your lids, and bronzing powder on your cheeks.

3. Definition & Precision - Line your lips with a lip pencil. Like red lipsticks, orange lippies will tend to “bleed” and make your lips look out of shape. Be precise when applying the shade. Unless you have really steady hands, use a lip brush and never go wrong.

4. Suit It Up - Finally, fill your lips with the shade of orange that is just right for you. Fairer skins can opt for oranges that are neon or coral. Olive skins can opt for orange lipsticks with more blue in them. Dark skins are truly blessed in this department. You can go all out for any shades of orange, ranging from neon to true orange.

In terms of texture, cream, satin and matte orange lipsticks wear best on most skin tones. Glossy lipsticks can be easily transformed with blotting and a light dust of translucent loose powder. This makes your lipstick last longer as well!

Contrary to beliefs that orange can make our skin look sallow, the ideal shade of orange can actually brighten up our skin. The task, then, is to find that orange lipstick that is perfect for you. We suggest trying these 8 carefully curated orange lipsticks:
